Dr. Roman Kräussl, Visiting Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University and Professor of Art-Finance at the University of Luxembourg will be in conversation with Carrie Scott of Carrie Scott & Partners and Gemma Rolls-Bentley, Private Sales Lead at Artsy and Columnist & Curator of the Gay Times, to explore the causes of the gender divide in the art market. Based on empirical evidence that works by female artists sell for significantly lower prices and with less frequency than those by male artists, this discussion will explore the role that gender has played both historically and today on the way artwork is priced and sold, which artists have gallery representation, and which artists are collected by major museums -- all factors that impact an artist’s career. The panel will look at the way social bias is embedded in the art market in surprising and often difficult to perceive ways and suggests solutions how to overcome this gender bias in the international art markets.
